Introduction This is the web page for those interested in Java Lava volcano trips and hiking in Indonesia in general. The "Java Lava's" are a group of expats and Indonesians that enjoy scrambling up and down volcanos. There is no formal structure to the group and this web page is an attempt to have a central site where those interested can post comments and ideas, trip reports, search for route information or hiking partners or anything related to hiking in Indonesia. Trip Requirements: Most trips are suitable for anyone of average fitness but some of the climbs can be quite tough so check with the leader re fitness and equipment requirements. Although no technical expertise is required, it does help if one is reasonably fit. Overnight trips tend to be easier than day trips. Porters are arranged to carry the camping gear so participants only need carry a light day pack. Sometimes we go up and down in a day but we will often camp near the top and enjoy the Alpine experience. You will need good boots. When you are not going up, you are going down! It gets cold above 3,000m in Indonesia with night time temperatures dropping to around 5'C normally and to below freezing in some places. Frosts can occur in the dry season in some areas and if it rains at 3,000m it can get miserable. It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure that they are fit enough and suitably attired and prepared for the trip. There is no committment from the team leader to take care of those who arrive under prepared. These are not "All in Catered Guided Tours" Tour leaders are not reimbursed for leading a trip. Please also read the "Gear List" and "Additional Information for Java Lava Participants" in the 'Notes' below The small Print: "All those who join a trip do so at their own risk. There is no responsibilty implied or otherwise accepted by the trip leaders or organizers or anyone in any way connected with Java Lava, for any eventuality arising from the trip." History The Java Lava group has been going for at least 20 years and has hiked up most mountains in Indonesia in that time. Although certain past trips were more "endurance than enjoyment", Java lava has aged into a dedicated hiking and camping group.
